About

The Uri Tzvi Greenberg House has been operating in Jerusalem for over a decade for the purpose of furthering the legacy and literary heritage of the outstanding national poet, Uri Tzvi Greenberg (1896 – 1981). Greenberg was awarded the Israel Prize for literature in 1957 and was three times the recipient of the Bialik Prize for literature in 1947, 1954 and 1977. Due to historical and politically-related circumstances, his poetry was restricted to a small circle of admirers but the Greenberg House activities have contributed in a major fashion to rediscovering his work and spreading it amongst teachers, students and especially the younger generation. Uri Tzvi Greenberg, otherwise known as Atzag when using the Hebrew abbreviation of his initials, was a many-faceted poet of extreme output. His 3,000 Hebrew poems are collected in 13 volumes with another four volumes, so far, containing his essays and newspaper articles and columns all published by the prestigious Bialik Publishing House. Greenberg is considered a lyrical poet as well as strongly political with both a nationalist and universal character and is thought of as Jerusalem's poet laureate. The Greenberg House is supported by the Ministries of Education and Culture as well as the Jerusalem Municipality. The chairperson is former MK and Deputy Minister Geula Cohen, also a recipient of the Israel Prize. The public is invited to participate in the various events and programs which include: - A monthly writing workshop with an emphasis on the musical element - Lectures on Greenberg's poetry and themes of Jewish/Israel identity - Sessions on Hebrew popular song - Seminars on literature creativity - Workshops and competitions in song composition - Shows, performances, recitals and events on Zionist themes including Jerusalem, the Underground resistance for liberation, leadership etc - Theater playback, plastic art, lyricism and composition - Tours and the stories of poets, houses, streets and forgotten people of Jerusalem - Special youth summer camp in creative writing - Russian-language courses in translation.
