Bloomfield Science Museum
About
The Bloomfield Science Museum is a special place for a family outing and offers a slightly different way of learning, with various simultaneous exhibits and interactive displays that invite children and their parents to touch and get actively involved.
The Museum features Footprints of Light, an active presentation that invites visitors to test the newest technology – light writing – using colored beams of light. The exhibition replicates an urban environment, with a marketplace, central clock, cafe, cinema, and pond. Children and parents (yes, grandparents too) are invited to cover a wall with graffiti, shoot stars into the sky, visit a cafe, launch a pendulum, create animated movies, pedal bicycles through the streets using a light brush, and leave fish-shaped footprints in the town pond. All this and more, through an innovative and unique technique of light writing that gradually fades until it’s ready for the next visitor.
Other exhibits at the Museum include Innovations Inc., an exhibition that traces the sources of Israeli technological and scientific innovations, and Touching Water, a trio of exhibitions boasting huge interactive displays in a pool of water that shed insight into the characteristics of water as well as water conservation. The exhibition Illusions is also a popular one and reveals the inner workings of the parts of the brain that cause us to accept illusions as reality.
A current highlight is the Other Lives art exhibition at the museum (until 04.04.13), inspired by Alan Turing, that explores what it means to be human in a digital age in an interactive, funny manner. Other exhibitions are about universal characteristics of communication, electricity, level and pulley technology, the science and technology behind amusement park rides, and much more.
Guided tours are conducted at the Museum on a daily basis, as well as demonstrations and crafts workshops for young children, who can build small “display items” and take them home as a souvenir. On Saturdays, holidays, and during vacations, there are science demonstrations and interactive performances involving the audience and suited to the entire family.
The Museum is located in Givat Ram, near the entrance to Jerusalem, alongside the Israel Museum and science campus of the Hebrew University, across from the Knesset and government buildings.
