The American Colony

About

When you examine the list of Jerusalem Hotels, one of the names that jumps out is the American Colony Hotel, with a name that doesn’t seem quite right in a scenery of hotels with grand names connoting royalty and holiness.

But the American Colony Hotel can boast a rich history all its own as well as some of the top luxury lodging in Jerusalem. It may seem like an unlikely spot, but for Anna and Horatio Spafford Jerusalem seemed the natural choice for a utopian commune. The Chicago natives led a small contingent to the Holy Land in 1881 and established their very own Messianic society in Jerusalem. The commune, whose ranks were bolstered in 1896 by two groups of Swedish settlers, soon became known as the American Colony.

The current-day American Colony Hotel is housed in a building that was bought by the group in 1895. The place became a hotel around the turn of the century, and its ideally “diplomatic” location, astraddle the east-west-Jerusalem divide, has allowed it to play host to many foreign diplomats and distinguished guests over the years. In recent years it has also become the focal point of a small hotel district that has come to include the Grand Court Hotel and the Olive Tree Hotel Jerusalem.

The American Colony Hotel is outfitted with 86 luxurious rooms and suites in several categories and all of the amenities needed for a perfect stay. For dining, guests can choose between five restaurants, each of which offers its own delectable cuisine, from Arabic food to afternoon tea, served with scones, a slice of English cake, and, most importantly, a generous slice of history.

The hotel bookstore was featured in a Jpost Online article "Top 5 Bookstores".
