Some years ago I attended the American Colony for dinner and thought what a charming and delightful place it was, so when I agreed to lead my book club members on an 8 day trip to Israel I immediately thought of the Colony as a great venue for one of our group dinners and booked the restaurant months ahead. We also reconfirmed it two days before the actual date ( 14 April 2018). It was high on my list of choices for dining but when we actually arrived at the restaurant we were told there was no reservation and they didn't have place for us in the main courtyard restaurant which we wanted and if we wanted a table the only option was to go in a side room unless we were prepared to wait at least another half hour for a table in the Courtyard. As it was already quite late we decided not to wait but took the side room well away from the attractive Courtyard restaurant. We were the only people in the big empty space devoid of character. Having got seated there the waiters then tried to serve us three courses of fixed menu which we didn't ask for and didn't want as we always wanted the alacarte. It seems they were confusing us with another booking! So the soup was taken away and eventually we got the alacarte menus. Our booking was for 8pm and we got there on time but it was 9.15pm before we saw any food whatsoever. When the main courses finally arrived about 10pm four of the dishes were missing 2 of the ingredients described on the menu. Some 15 minutes later we received the overcooked caramelized goose liver on a side plate. At first the manager tried to suggest that it was our agent that had made a mistake in the booking but when we produced the written evidence of the booking he had to concede it was the restaurants mistake. The evening can only be described as a disaster that went from bad to worse. We imagined under the circumstances that the manager would pull out all stops to soften the blow or compensate us but nothing at all was forthcoming, not even the offer of a complimentary drink at the end of the evening to make some recompense. On leaving we made this observation to the manager and his only comment was that we didn't have to leave a gratuity but we did want to penalize the waiters who had done their best. It would have cost them but cost the manager nothing, which we thought very unfair. It was such a huge disappointment and embarrassment to me as leader of the group. I would not rule out going back to the American Colony either as a resident or diner but before I do that I am looking for some concession from the management for this fiasco.

We loved our week at The American Colony! The location was perfect for sightseeing - walking distance to Old City. Staff was super, restaurants are excellent. Rooms are spacious, modern & great amenities. The gardens & courtyard are idyllic as is the pool.

Wonderful Hotel

Superb service at this hotel. All staff was attentive and extremely helpful. The breakfast is devine, fresh fruit, wonderful breads, and anything you can think of. Definitely my favorite hotel in Israel and definitely five star.
