Friday Family Fun at the First Station
Friday is simply the most charming day of the week in Jerusalem, as everybody welcomes the weekend with morning trips to the shuk, long breakfasts and brunches in the sun, day-trips to Ein Karem and the Jerusalem Hills and much more.
For families with kids, however, the First Station is far and away the top spot, offering a fun mix of activities, facilities and concerts to keep the kids entertained alongside a selection of dining and drinking options and one of the best arts, crafts and design fairs in the city for the parents.
Check out what the First Station has in store for family Fridays…
Family Stroll on the Old Train Tracks
When the city renovated the Old Train Station, it also spruced up the area around it with a bit of nature and a paved walking and bicycle path that gives you a chance to soak in the peaceful atmosphere of Jerusalem’s quaint Baka neighborhood.
A stroll along the old train tracks goes best with a cool treat like a cup of fresh juice, ice cream or a milkshake.
The Kids Station
If your kids need some entertainment, take them to check out some of the kid-friendly installations at the First Station:
- The Kids Train simulates a ride on the original Ottoman train ride from 1892.
- The carousel is a nice throwback that’s fun for the kids and nostalgic for the parents.
- The bungee trampoline gives kids a chance to jump around to their heart’s desire while remaining safe.
- Located in a large tent, the gymbosport complex has a host of sporty activities for kids and toddlers (additional entrance fee; no ticket sales on Saturday).
- And of course, laser tag
The Beer Garden
No, we don’t mean to feed your kids beer, but at the Beer Garden, you can relax and enjoy a few drinks while keeping an eye on the kids as they play on the nearby gymboree.
Once they’ve worn themselves out enough to sit through a meal, you can either order up some food at the Beer Garden or hop on over to Landwer or the Kitchen Station for a more extensive menu.
Kids Concert and Bubble Party
Starting at 11:00 am every Friday, local musicians stop by to play kid-friendly music while the kids get to play with giant bubble-makers. Some weekends there is also a kids exercise class.
Every weekend, the First Station hosts a communal celebration to welcome Shabbat with music, singing and a generally charming family-friendly atmosphere.
