Augusta Victoria - a magnificent church with a rich history
The complex covers about 80 dunams and has a church with a bell tower that rises to 60 meters. The Augusta Victoria Church is one of the most beautiful and magnificent in Jerusalem, and it is dedicated to Jesus' ascension to heaven from the Mount of Olives. On the eastern side of the complex, you can find the "German Protestant Institute for Archeology in the Holy Land", with a large library
You can enter the complex for a nominal fee. The place is open daily except Sunday between 8:00 and 13:00.
In the complex area, there is a pilgrim hostel currently used as a hospital. The hostel building was converted into a military hospital during World War I and also served as the main headquarters of the Turkish-German General Headquarters in Jerusalem.
In 1917, after Britain occupied Jerusalem, the complex was converted into its army headquarters in the Land of Israel. When the British Mandate period began in 1920, the building housed the government institutions.
