The reunification of the holy city of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six Day War will always be a landmark in the thirty-six-century history of the Jewish people. Regaining Jewish control of the Old City meant driving the Jordanian army off Ammunition Hill (Hebrew Giv'at Ha-Tachmoshet)--a heavily fortified complex of underground bunkers and trenches--originally built by the British army in East Jerusalem. A fierce four-hour battle that began 2:30 in the morning saw many dead on both sides, but by sunrise the Israelis were victorious. Ammunition Hill is a literal stone's throw from the Jerusalem neighborhood of French Hill, and Hebrew University is within eyeshot to the northeast.
