As everything in Jerusalem, this is also an interesting area to visit. It was quiet and peaceful in the entire area while we visited it.

Actually an extension of the Arab and Jewish markets, the Cardo was re-established during Ted Kollek's administration. There are interesting architectural details but no much more. This connects to the passage leading to the Kotel.

As with all Jerusalem, very interesting, quiet on the day we visited, Saturday. Looking down on the older ruins was interesting.

The Cardo is an enclosed mall with high vaulted ceilings located within the Jewish Quarter of old Jerusalem. The original Northern section runs from the Damascus Gate to David Street, and dates back to Roman times. The Southern section stretches along the western side of the Jewish Quarter and was built in the Byzantine period, The part that we visited was a series of covered colonnaded pedestrian ways lined with modern galleries and shops featuring paintings, other works of art and religious items for sale. The expansive halls and sitting areas were a welcome relief from the crowded alleyways of the souks.

Built in the time of Constantine, it as the main market for the what is now the "old city" of Jerusalem, walking along the Cardo is a must if you are visiting Israel. There are now arts and crafts shops along the thoroughfare. Plenty of signage to guide the unaccompanied tourist with useful historical facts.
