You can see the Dome of the Rock and the al-Aqsa Mosque without going up the bridge and entering the Temple Mount compound. In fact, there are some great places to view it from and it is particularly striking in the evening, before sunset, when the sun is glistening on the roof. We were disappointed when we went up the bridge and entered Temple Mount because, quite different from many many other mosques I have visited, you are not allowed to enter either the DotR or the mosque. We asked if we could and were met with quite hostile responses! I wouldn't bother - just find a roof top cafe like the Golden City Panoramic Restaurant, get a cold drink and enjoy the view!

The Dome of the Rock is one of the top 3 sights in Jerusalem. The shrine itself is very impressive as it is covered with dazzling mosaics. There is also the iconic golden dome. The shrine is surrounded by well tended gardens. The day my wife and I visited the compound was very crowded with visitors. I had read that there can be a long wait to enter via the non Muslim entrance near the Western Wall. At the beginning of our visit there was a very long line, but it moved quickly. We arrived on line at 1:20 and reached the entrance by 1;50. So not a bad wait. There is considerable security to pass before entering. Be sure to bring a passport.

Situated near the Al-Aqsa mosque, the dome of the rock is a truly magnificent mosque, and one of the best places to visit in Jerusalem. The Golden dome is spectacular, and the intricate art on the mosaics, even more so. Non-Muslims are not permitted inside the mosque but there is enough and more to see outside. Tourists are only permitted inside at certain times so make sure to plan accordingly if you wish to visit. Please ensure to wear slightly conservative dress when you visit. The dome and its surrounding areas were surprisingly peaceful when we visited (during the morning). There is plenty of space for photography outside the mosque. The spectacular artwork and the serene atmosphere make this mosque an must visit for any who wish to visit Jerusalem.
