In a city of a million churches, this is one of the best. It is very old and very authentic. As I recall it is Greek Orthodox. It is just outside the Southern Wall of the Temple Mount.

The church is orthodox so it wasn't on our cathedral pilgrimage list but we visited on our own. It very dark inside as orthodox use candles so the smoke makes walls black. There is long staircase down so if someone has trouble with their knees it's not recommended.

Beautiful place down into the earth.

The tomb of the Virgin Mary was, for a long time flooded. It is a Greek Orthodox Church honoring the Mother of God. As opposed to the Catholic tradition, which tells that the Virgin did not die, but went to sleep, the Orthodox depicts her passing as actually dying. It is steps from the entrance to the Church of the Nations. Worth a visit.
