The Mount of Olives is the high hill across the valley from the Temple Mount and the Old City, and is the site of many events from the life of Jesus. It is worth most of a day to explore. Unless you are in very good physical condition, take a bus or taxi to the top. There is a great view of the city (seen in many photos but not to be missed). At the top is a beautiful Russian Orthodox monastery very near the traditional place of Christ's Ascension. Another church is the traditional place where Jesus taught the disciples the Lord's Prayer. Much of the hillside is taken up with cemeteries where all the graves look towards the Temple Mount and the Golden Gate, where the Messiah is expected to come. Somewhat farther down is the golden-domed Russian Orthodox Church of St. Mary Magdalene, and towards the bottom is the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed after the Last Supper and was arrested, the famous church of All Nations, the Greek Orthodox church marking the site of the Virgin Mary's tomb, and a small Greek church dedicated to St. Stephen the First Martyr, who was stoned to death in the area. You can walk down the hill following the route taken on the Palm Sunday procession, but it is steep, the stones are somewhat slippery, and cars sometimes zip by fairly close to pedestrians.
