This course lays bare the longevity of Jews doing violence towards images of Christ in Christian literature and non-literary sources and examines how allegations, judicial accusations as well as related charges launched within works of art affected Jewish individuals and communities. Ranging from the Byzantine Empire in the V century to early modern Europe at the end of XVII, it focuses on a particular aspect of late-medieval anti-Judaism: how the Jews were portrayed by Christians as desecrators.
