The Jewish Film Festival will take in Jerusalem for the 21st time. This year it will address the subject of cultural pluralism during a festive event that will take place at the Jerusalem Cinematheque, December 19-26. Dozens of movies will be screened during the festival, presenting a wide range of Israeli cinematic achievements: a documentary about Jewish families from all around the globe, Israeli films dealing with current social issues, movies about influential Jewish minds and artists, short films and the short films’ competition, restorations, lectures, panels, live performances, and more.

“Hidden Life” and the International Competition
Directed by Terrence Malick, 173 minutes.
The new film by the renowned director Terrence Malick “Hidden Life” is based on the life of the anonymous hero Franz Jägerstätter (played by August Diehl), who refused to swear allegiance to Hitler. When the Austrian rural farmer faces execution for treason, his faith, and love of his wife and children strengthen his spirit. Despite having plenty of opportunities to sign the oath of allegiance, Jägerstätter was finally executed by the Third Reich in August 1943. The well-known writer and director, Terrence Malick, presents a beautiful and epic work that was introduced in Cannes Festival 2019 and “deconstructs religion and nationalism by looking at someone who refused to fight.” (Vox.com)
The “Hidden Life” movie is nominated in the International Category in the Jewish Film Festival competition.

“Anton” and the religion race
Directed by Zaza Urushadze, 102 minutes
The movie “Anton” takes place in a small village in Ukraine in 1919. It is a tale of young German Catholic, Anton, and Jacob – Russian Jewish who were inseparable friends. It was a time of many changes, ethnic and religious conflicts, following World War I and the Russian Revolution. The film, directed by Zaza Urushadze, whose previous film “Tangerines” was nominated for the Oscars and the Golden Globe examines the universal power of kids’ friendship and show how it can overcome the prejudices of the grown-up world, riddled by hatred and vengeance.
The film “Anton” is nominated in the interfaith category of the Jewish Film Festival competition.

“Never Stop Dreaming – The Life and Legacy of Shimon Peres”
Directed by Richard Trank, 126 minutes
Nine months before his demise in 2016, Shimon Peres conducted a series of interviews with the filmmaker Richard Trank. He told about his childhood in Belarus and later in Palestine-Israel, discussed his activities in the army and the Knesset, the 1984 prime ministerial election, the Peres Center for Peace, and his return to politics in 2001. Along with the graceful narration of George Clooney, the film contains interviews with Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Tony Blair, and Barbara Streisand.
The film “Never Stop Dreaming” is nominated in the Great Jewish Minds nomination of the Jewish Film Festival competition.

“When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit”: The closing event
Directed by Caroline Link, 110 minutes
“When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit” by Caroline Link was chosen as the closing screening of the festival. The movie revolves around Anna, nine years old girl whose entire world is turned upside down. It’s 1933, and Hitler is rising to power. On election night, Anna’s family flees Germany, leaving her pink bunny behind. Anna lives in a foreign land, without knowing the languages and the local customs. She misses her friends, suffers in school and from the difficult financial situation, along with the xenophobia that is felt everywhere. Despite everything, Anna grows up and takes responsibility when her family has to run away again, and now she’s sure that nothing won’t stand in her way. Oscar-winning director Caroline Link (“Nowhere in Africa”) returns to the big screen with this exciting film about foreignness and exile. The movie is based on a novel by Judith Kerr.
