Our tour party of 19 came here for an arranged lunch which offered a range of delicious salads followed by chicken in a light mushroom sauce and a moist carrot cake for dessert. It was a very good lunch. We also had the opportunity to sit on the roof terrace, rest and enjoy the sun during a very hectic day. The terrace offers great views of the city.

We were given the newly renovated single terrace rooms in the 3rd floor: modern, simple, clean —and fantastic views. The dreaded morning prayer call from nearby mosque wasn’t as bad as I anticipated, now that you can close the windows and turn on the aircon. Volunteers who run the place were very nice and accommodating. We arrived before our rooms were ready. Seeing us exhausted, the reception staff offered a common bathroom to freshen up, brought us to the roof terrace to wait/rest and even offered us Jerusalem bagels she bought for herself. (They were delicious!) Also arranged for us to join a visiting group from Ireland for their Mass. There is the Ecce Homo church downstairs that is glassed-in so groups doing the Way of the Cross (Ecce Homo is the first station) and visiting the Lithostrotos in the basement don’t really bother you. And if you want extra peace & silence, there’s a small Blessed Sacrament Chapel on the 2nd floor, accessible only to residents. Food, including the $15 dinner which we pre-booked, is simple, home cooked and good. The views from the roof terrace (several levels) are the best features of this place. You can see the Dome of the Rock and a huge swath of the city from there. You can catch both the sun rising and setting over the city. Such peace and beauty. Only downside was getting to the place with your luggages: you have to drag them at least 350m (up from Lions Gate or 500m or so from Damascus Gate) over narrow, cobbled pathways and some stairs.

Our stay here surpassed our expectations. Some reviews that we had read prior to our visit said that the rooms were basic and that the meals were not great. We found these reviews to be very far from the truth. The meals (we had breakfast here twice and dinner once) were excellent, good portions and good mix of Arabic/Israeli and western. Dinner was an exceptional affair, they offer wine as well for those who want to purchase a bottle/glass to go with their meal. The price of the wine is very very reasonable compared to what you would pay if eating at a restaurant in Jerusalem. The staff are what makes this place exceptional. From front desk to kitchen volunteers to the maids, everyone is so helpful, friendly and they take an interest in you. Our room was small but very modern, clean and had everything you need when on a pilgrimage. The WiFi is excellent as well. Despite a mosque being just behind our room with the call to prayer sounding at 4am every morning, we managed to sleep right through it from day two. It may be hard to get to this convent from Damascus gate if you are dragging large suitcases (which we did) but it is worth it. It may be helpful to know that it is easier to arrive at Lion's gate instead of Damascus gate. We left through Lion's gate and it was better! The location of the convent is excellent - right on the Via Dolorosa, great view to the Dome of the Rock and close to all the markets. The views from the terraces are amazing. We cannot recommend this convent enough to would-be pilgrims. Don't let other reviews deter you. As I started off with - this convent was nothing like what we expected, it was in fact miles better than our expectations and we would definitely stay here again when in Jerusalem next. Thank you to Sandra and all the kitchen volunteers!
