Since its opening in 1984, the Jerusalem Film Festival has become a significant international platform for the presentation of Israeli cinema and the exposure of the best of world cinema. For eleven days more than 200 films are screened, offering a rich and varied program, alongside numerous professional events for film industry members from Israel and abroad.

The Jerusalem Film Festival’s Gala Opening Ceremony takes place at the Sultan’s Pool, an ancient water basin turned into an outdoor amphitheater with a spectacular views of the Old City walls. On the Festival’s Opening Night, which attracts thousands of viewers, the selected opening film is screened on an enormous screen in the presence of world renowned film directors & actors, local and international members of the film industry, and the general public. Additional events include nightly parties at the Jerusalem Cinematheque, outdoor screenings, and festival activities throughout the city.

This variety of events has gradually turned the JFF into the most important cinematic gathering in Israel. Past guests have included Jeanne Moreau, Marcello Mastroianni, Robert De Niro, Mike Leigh, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Nanni Moretti, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Michael Haneke, John Malkovich, Roman Polanski, Wim Wenders, Richard Linklater, Spike Jonze, Lena Dunham and Quentin Tarantino.
