One of Jerusalem’s prime hangout spots for locals and tourists alike, Ben Yehuda Street is a pedestrian mall extending between King George Street and Jaffa Road in downtown Jerusalem. Commonly referred to as "The Midrechov" (a Hebrew portmanteau merging the words for "street" and "sidewalk"), Ben Yehuda has been closed to motorized traffic since 1983 – a trend that has since extended to several more streets in the surrounding area.
Ben Yehuda Street attracts a constant throng of tourists, who mill about the many gift shops and stop for falafel or ice cream in one of the small eateries lining the street. Entertainment abounds - often impromptu- as Ben Yehuda Street is often dotted with musicians and street performers, and during summer and holiday seasons, the municipality hosts festivals  live music festivals.
From souvenirs to shoes, meat bistros to frozen yogurt stands, Ben Yehuda Street is a must any Jerusalem visit.

Between December 1916 and December 1917, the British Empire launched a campaign to take over the city of Jerusalem from the Ottoman Empire, and in the process lost many soldiers. The British Military Cemetery on Mount Scopus, also known as the Jerusalem War Cemetery, houses the graves of more than 2,500 fallen Commonwealth soldiers from these years. The cemetery consists of simple headstones that detail the name, age, date of death and the unit of the soldiers, with 100 of them unidentified. 
The grounds also houses the Jerusalem Memorial as a tribute to the Commonwealth servicemen who died during operations in Egypt and elsewhere in the nearby areas during the time.  The Jerusalem Memorial includes a chapel with a mosaic designed by Robert Anning Bell, and unveiled in 1927 by Lord Allenby, one of Britain’s greatest war heroes, who had been instrumental in the conquest of Palestine and Syria during World War I.

The Dome of the Ascension is west of the Dome of the Rock. It is a church with a cruciform structure from the 12th century used as a Christian baptismal chapel that preserves the memory of Jesus' ascension to heaven 40 days after his resurrection.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church has maintained a quiet presence in Jerusalem for more than 1,500 years, with some people claiming that there has been an Ethiopian delegacy in the Holy Land ever since the famed meeting of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon some 3,000 years ago.
For many centuries, the center of the Ethiopian Church in Jerusalem was a small courtyard with several structures behind the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in the Christian Quarter of the Old City. Today, however, the Church has to a large extent relocated outside the walls to the western city. The move began in the 19th century, when a succession of powerful Ethiopian monarchs decided to establish a strong presence outside Africa. In 1888, Ethiopian Emperor Yohanes bought a large plot of land and began construction of a new church and monastery. The complex eventually lent its name to the road on which it is situated - Ethiopia Street.
The new church is an impressive structure in a secluded courtyard, built in the circular style reminiscent of other Ethiopian churches. The complex is usually a haven of tranquility in the heart of downtown Jerusalem, but during Easter things pick up, and it is recommended to visit and witness the lively services. Remember to take off your shoes at the entrance as this is a requirement of the Ethiopian rite.

The largest stretch of picnic greenery in Jerusalem, Gan Sacher (or Sacher Park) (pronounced Sah-kehr) is situated between the Nachlaot and Rehavia neighborhoods on one side, and the complex of government buildings and museums in Givat Ram, Gan Sacher is the largest green space in Jerusalem.

Visiting Hutzot Hayotzer (sometimes spelled Khutsot HaYotser or Chutzot Hayotzer) is an opportunity to meet the artists of the artists' colony, see them at work, talk to them about their creative processes and purchase straight from the creators.
Between your gallery visits, rest on one of the benches that line the picturesque pathway, view the lovely fountains of <a href="/city/jerusalem/teddy-park/">Teddy Park</a> in the garden next door or enjoy a meal at a restaurant overlooking the charming Yemin Moshe neighborhood or the walls of the Old City.
The enchanting alleyways of Hutzot Hayotzer have been home to Israeli artists for over 40 years. As you tour the compound, chances are you will encounter well-known artists whose works are exhibited in the most prestigious Israeli and foreign museums.
On display are sculptures, photographs, paintings, drawings, metalwork, embroidery, ceramics, decorative weaving and plenty of Judaica.
The buildings of Hutzot Hayotzer were constructed during the 1930s as part of the Jurat el-Anab neighborhood. In 1948 the area was abandoned as it become the boundary between the east and west sides of Jerusalem – the Jordanian and Israeli border ran straight through the neighborhood. In 1967 when Jerusalem was reunited, the compound underwent renovations and was designated as an arts district.
At Hutzot Hayotzer Artists’ Colony enjoy breathtaking views, history and a feast of Israeli art.

Hutzot Hayotzer is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Jerusalem, adjacent to Sultan's Pool, between the walls of the Old City and the first Jewish neighborhood outside of Jerusalem, <a href="/city/jerusalem/mishkenot-shaananim/">Mishkenot Ha'ananim</a>.
Once in the area, it's highly recommended to take advantage of all it has to offer. Walk a couple of minutes and enter the <a href="/articles/only-at-the-old-city/">Old City</a> of Jerusalem via Zion or Jaffa gates. Visit the <a href="/city/jerusalem/church-of-the-holy-sepulchre/">Church of the Holy Sepulchre</a> and the <a href="/city/jerusalem/the-jerusalem-western-wall/">Western Wall</a>. Walk around the Arab Shuk in the Muslim Quarter, sit in one of the <a href="/articles/old-city-restaurants/">restaurants or coffee shops in the Old City</a>.
You also should consider visiting the <a href="/city/jerusalem/the-first-station/">First Station</a>, a very popular new leisure complex, a lovely area full of <a href="/articles/restaurants-in-the-first-station/">restaurants</a> and boutique stores with activities on an ongoing basis. Independence Park is a large green area in the center of Jerusalem, bounded by King George Street to the West, Agron Street to the south, Hillel Street to the north and the old Mamilla Cemetery to the east. During the time of the British Mandate, the Park was an open area that served as a barrier between the Jewish city center and the upscale Arab neighborhoods to the south. After Jerusalem was partitioned in the 1948 War of Independence, the nascent Israeli government decided that the area would become a green area; thus Independence Park was established in 1959.
During the daylight hours, the Park mostly serves the many people who work in the center of town and like to have their lunches outside. Families from around the area come to hang out, picnic and kick a ball around, and young people can often be spotted leisurely sipping beers in the shade of the large pine trees. But like its namesake park in Tel-Aviv, after night falls, under a thick blanket of darkness, Independence Park becomes a rendezvous spot for members of Jerusalem’s gay community. It is this function that has made the Park a convergence point for many LGBT events, including the annual gay pride parade. Other events held at Independence Park include the yearly Student’s Day celebrations when thousands turn out to enjoy live music performances.
