Fortuna
- Price $$$$
Fortuna Steakhouse is a relatively new steakhouse opened by Chef Eyal Vaknin, a skillful cook with deep knowledge and understanding of all things meat. For the reasonable price of 50-70 ILS you can select your meat course of choice from the counter. All of the meat is super-fresh, changed daily according to the supply. After choosing your cut, an endless flow of appetizers will start flowing to your table: eggplants, tahini, beets, Syrian olives and white cabbage all made to perfection. You’ll also get a whopping pile of crispy French fries, fried especially for you. If you’re not full by the end, guests are welcome to ask for extra salads or fries, at no extra charge. This is a place that makes you feel like home. Ask Chef Eyal for a shot of the local arak – Bazooka.

The location allows them to pick the freshest produce available. Fortuna looks like a hole-in-the-wall place, but the food is great and the prices are reasonable. It’s location just off the main street of the shuk is hidden from the many shuk’s tourist attractions. If you’re looking for “ambiance” or a place to impress your first date, this isn’t it. But if you want a family place with local color, try Fortuna.

MoreDon't expect good service here. Entered this place and asked to charge my phone (emergency) and said I'd buy a drink so I wasn't just taking up space. Despite the place being mostly empty, the host (stocky bald guy) told me straight away he'll need me to move if there's not enough tables. 20 minutes later my friend joins me at the table. About 20 minutes after that the joint has filled up more, the host comes over and asks us to leave. There's still a free table inside and a few outside and I point this out. My friend offers to buy a drink himself. The host just ignores us. I tell him again my friend is going to buy a drink. Again he ignores me. Finally his friend walks me out and tells me they only serve people who buy a meal. I tell him his friend (the host) is rude. Then this 2nd guy tells me to never come back. I won't. Avoid this place, I'm sure you can get similar food and much better, friendlier service in the area.

MoreThe meal was excellent at a good price. We had skewers and filet mignon (which is unusual at kosher restaurants) and it came with salads. They refilled at the start but then stopped doing so - I guess they would have if we asked for more refills but the waiters seemed engrossed in other things than coming over or looking at our table. The food came quickly and was very good (and there were left overs for the next day)
