Mifgash HaSheikh

The first branch of Mifgash Hasheikh (the sheikh’s meeting place) was established in July 1990 on Tzeret Street in Talpiot, the first of its kind in Jerusalem open 24 hours a day except for Shabbat. The restaurant was only 80 square meters yet had an incredible atmosphere and will always be remembered as the mythological branch. What sets this restaurant apart and has turned it into a brand name for the past 20 years is its recipes and quality ingredients – the dough, real cheeses, special sauce and sesame seeds all baked in the original stone oven. Where does the name “Mifgash HaSheikh” come from? In the 1980’s, way before laptops, Facebook and smartphones, the Sheikh sat in the Old City and welcomed guests on Friday nights. Guests would drink Sahlab, eat long pretzels with za’atar and savor a good watermelon for dessert into the wee hours of the night. Then, at the onset of the first Intifada, it was difficult to find the way to the “sheikh” so the idea came to move the meeting place from within the Old City walls to popular nightlife areas, hence the name “Mifgash Hasheikh”.

MoreWe were seated at a table that was supposed to be clean, but the tablecloth was covered with crumbs from the previous diner. We had to ask our waiter several times to bring over our appetizer. Finally, after all of the food was served the restaurant started filling up and the waiters started clearing off our table before we were done , telling us that we needed to hurry since they needed the space. They removed all of our dinner service and the table cloth, not giving us enough time to say the after meal blessings.

MoreIt is a pity that there is no updated menu to peruse!nWe are in September 2020. This means in the height of a second wave of Carona!nYou either have to have a takeaway menu or delivery!nI opted for the latter!!nI couldn’t see a menu so I opted for a stuffed chicken with rice and chips!nBoth were good the rice amazing the chips not worth bothering for delivery ! Maybe fresh from the pan would have been better!!nI also took for my son Pargiot off , that was OK but not amazing ! The potatoes again nothing to write home aboutnThe green beans were tasty!!!nPortions were disappointing !!nMaybe in the restaurant they are more generous as the write ups suggest!nI would order again , but would verify more about the menu!!!
