Mona has been located in the ground level of the Bezalel Art Museum (Shmuel HaNagid 12, Jerusalem) for years. The hundred-year-old Bezalel Art School is named after the biblical Betzalel, the man who built the Ark of the Covenant and was the designer of the Tabernacle. The Lithuanian artist Boris Schatz set up the “Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts” in 1906 and it is now a part of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on Mount Scopus. The Museum on Shmuel HaNagid is what remains of the old School. Mona has a long reputation as one of the better restaurants in Jerusalem (although non-kosher). About four years ago my granddaughter Gavi, and I had a marvelous dinner there. I’m sad to report that the service and food have deteriorated. The bartender was a rather snotty young woman who seemed to barely want to serve us pre-dinner drinks. Dinner was slow to arrive and cool when it did. The non-kosher food that was once extensive, was reduced to an appetizer of oysters. My steak was tough. I was disappointed.

Sharing-style dinner, so I had a chance to try many things. I liked the first courses that were unique and very tasty. On the main courses, the fish with mashed potatoes was delicious. With the good wines it was an enjoyable evening in an elegant and pleasant atmosphere

Disappointing

This is one of our favourite restaurants in Jerusalem - and we come here on special occasions. The food was good - but we would have expected better for the name and cost. In particular - two disappointing dishes were the Sea Bream (142 ILS) which was over-fried and overcooked and much too salty. The best things on the plate were the mash and the veg. Also, an almond dessert (some kind of mousse or cream or something) was much too heavy, making for a rather stodgy ending to the meal. Again, the best thing on the plate were the raspberries. I recommend the Sashimi salad - which was excellent. My husband enjoyed the ravioli starter and his meat dish.
