One of Jerusalem’s quainter areas is in and around Emek Refaim Street, where a group of German Templar's – not to be confused with the Knights Templar – founded a colony in 1873. The Templar's were a breakaway Protestant sect that encouraged believers to go to the Holy Land ahead of the impending Messianic redemption. They built their homes according to the dictates of the day’s German style, mostly one- or two-story farmhouses with shuttered windows and tiled roofs. In 1878, the Templar community established a cemetery where they buried community members and leaders.
The cemetery also includes a monument to 47 Templar soldiers killed in World War I. During World War II, the colony was dismantled and its members – German nationals who weren’t shy about their Nazi sympathies – were evacuated. Today the German Colony, and especially its main street, Emek Refaim, is one of hippest, trendiest spots in Jerusalem, with many boutiques and cafes. If you stop by and want to pay a visit to the Templar Cemetery, make sure to coordinate in advance.

The Garden of Olives - Gethsemane

The Gihon Spring was the main source of water for the City of David, the original site of Jerusalem. The spring was not only used for drinking water, but also initially for irrigation of gardens in the adjacent Kidron Valley. Today, the spring is sometimes used by Jewish men as a sort of mikvah (ritual bath).
 
Three main water systems allowed water to be brought from the spring to the city under cover: Warren's Shaft, Hezekiah's Tunnel and the Middle Bronze Age channel. Warren's Shaft and Hezekiah's Tunnel can be viewed today when visiting the City of David National Park.

The Mount of Olives is a high ridge that flanks ancient Jerusalem from the east and separates it from the Judean Desert. The ridge crowns Jerusalem from the east, starting from the slopes of Kidron river in the south and ending at Mount Scopus in the north.

Tolerance Monument is located at the  hilltop between the Jewish Armon Hanatziv neighborhood and Arab Jabal Mukaber, on the ruins of an ancient temple, the sculpture is composed of the two halves of a split column and a golden olive tree growing in between, shading both segments.

Founded in 1962, Yad LaKashish offers an alternative to traditional retirement and challenges stereotypes about the elderly. Sunday through Thursday, from 8:30am-12pm, some 300 of Jerusalem’s most disadvantaged elderly gather here to engage in creative work opportunities in a warm, community environment in exchange for a variety of financial and social benefits. These elderly artisans produce a range of beautiful items, including wall hangings, jewelry, prayer shawls, Judaica and more.
Stop by for a free, behind-the-scenes, tour of the artisan workshops, and finish your visit with a special shopportunity at the onsite gift shop, which features the special items handmade by the elderly.

Lifeline for the Old/Yad LaKashish

The Dome of the Ascension is west of the Dome of the Rock. It is a church with a cruciform structure from the 12th century used as a Christian baptismal chapel that preserves the memory of Jesus' ascension to heaven 40 days after his resurrection. With the city's conquest by the Muslims, the dome was dedicated to commemorating the ascension of the Prophet Muhammad to heaven. Today the building serves as an office of the Waqf.

Leading from the Gihon Spring to the Pool of Siloan, Hezekia’s Tunnel (also known as the Shiloah Tunnel) is one of only a few 8th-century-BC structures worldwide that are fully accessible to the public.
As the Bible tells us, the 533-meter-long tunnel was dug by King Hezekiah so that he could fortify the city against the invading Assyrian armies without compromising its main water source, the Gihon Spring, which lay outside the walls: “And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem, He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.
So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?” (2 Chronicles 32:2-4). According to an inscription in the tunnel, it took two years to dig, with two teams starting at each end and meeting in the middle. The tunnel was discovered in 1838 by US Bible scholar Edward Robinson. Besides the awesome experience of walking through an almost 3,000-year-old man-made tunnel, visitors – children especially – will enjoy the simple pleasure of wading through water that at times is waist-high.

Located just outside Jerusalem's Old City, on the eastern slope of Mount Zion, the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu is situated on the spot where, according to tradition, Jesus was jailed after his arrest by the Romans. The church's name is a reference to the crowing of the cock during Peter's triple denial of Jesus.
The Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu was built in 1931 on the remains of a succession of other churches, the oldest of which was a Byzantine shrine to Peter's repentance constructed in 457 CE. As such, it is a composite of various epochs and styles, combining ancient works of art with modern design. Among the more impressive fixtures are a huge mosaic depicting New Testament figures, and, in the courtyard, a statue that describes Jesus' denial by Peter.
The church also extends below ground, incorporating stone from ancient grottoes in the lower chapel. Descending further below ground level, one arrives at a series of Second Temple-era chambers, where Jesus was perhaps imprisoned. A staircase leading down to the Kidron Valley on the northern side of the church is said to have served as a passage between the upper and the lower cities during the time of the First Temple.

The Montefiore Windmill complex currently functions as an entertainment center. It includes the Jerusalem Wineries visitor center, which fits nicely into its magical and picturesque surroundings in the majestic Yemin Moshe neighborhood (which is also named after the philanthropist). In addition, you can enjoy a coffee and pastries truck, and drink your favorite drink at a spectacular vantage point that overlooks the old city's walls.

Mount Zion is the place of important sites and landmarks such as the Room of the Last Supper, King David’s Tomb, the Chamber of the Holocaust, and the Protestant Cemetery. In addition Oskar Schindler is buried here as a righteous gentile, and the Dormition Abbey is located here.

Jerusalem's magnificent Pontifical Institute Notre Dame is a towering French cathedral and guest house located across from the Old City's New Gate. As the director of Notre Dame explains, the complex was built in the 1880's in order to increase the flow of pilgrims to Jerusalem, and was part of an area called the "French Compound".

The French "Notre Dame," which means "Our Lady," is a reference to the Virgin Mary, who is said to have been assumed into heaven in Jerusalem.

The structure was built on a 400-square-meter plot that was bought by the Count of Piellat, and combined classical and modernist architecture with a touch of eastern motifs thrown in for good measure. In 1893, five years after Notre Dame received its first pilgrims, the cornerstone for the chapel was laid. And in 1904, after 20 years of unceasing construction, the marvelous nave was completed and the outside of the church was crowned with a statue of the Virgin Mary. During the War of Independence the building sustained heavy damage; a part of it was destroyed by explosions and became a guard post.

However, even after the situation quieted down, the center could no longer cope with the prohibitive maintenance costs, and was eventually turned over to the Vatican. Pope John Paul VI took the project under his wing, and in the late 1970's, Notre Dame reopened as the Holy See's international pilgrim center.

These days, Notre Dame is mostly used as a boutique <a href="/city/jerusalem/notre-dame/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">guesthouse</a> for pilgrims, who often attend the daily mass at 6:30 pm.

Simeon the Just (or Shimon HaTzaddik) was a Jewish High Priest during the time of the Second Temple and one of the sages of the early Tannaic period. He is perhaps best known for his maxim, cited in the Mishnah’s Tractate Avot, “The existence of the world is contingent on three things: Torah, worship and acts of loving-kindness.”
There is an ongoing dispute as to whether the structure known as the Tomb of Simeon the Just actually houses the remains of the lustrous sage. Jewish tradition would have it that the tomb, which is located just south of the British School of Archaeology on the outskirts of the Sheikh Jerah neighborhood, is indeed genuine. Archaeologists, however, date the tomb to the early Byzantine period, centuries after Simeon the Just. As with the Tombs of the Sanhedrin, the first record of the Tomb of Simeon the Just dates back to 1235, in the writings of Rabbi Jacob the Emissary.
According to historic sources, during the Ottoman period the site was regularly used for a public festival in honor of Simeon the Just, known as the “Yehudia,” which was attended by Jews, Muslims, and Christian. Today the tomb is a pilgrimage site for mostly Jewish worshipers, some of whom come to give their three-year-old boys their first haircuts in a mystical ceremony known as “upsherin” or “chalaka.”

Tzurim Valley National Park preserves 42 acres of open space around the walls of the Old City in the area between the Mount of Olives, Mount Scopus and the Kidron Valley.
The area is filled with olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation, is steeped in historical significance and also offers spectacular views of Jerusalem.
