In the Footsteps of Christian Sects – Self-Guided Tour
- Duration
3-4 hours
Overview
Processions of priests in dramatic ceremonial garb, emotional pilgrims with prayers on their lips and large wooden crosses on their backs, churches enveloped in the fragrance of incense and monastery gardens secluded behind heavy iron gates – these are the sights of Jerusalem in the footsteps of the Crusaders. A city that embraces cultures and customs from all over the Christian world and yet, for many local residents, it is a journey to an unknown land.
Jerusalem is the holiest city in Christianity. Jesus was in Jerusalem during the early and the final years of his life, and this is where he was crucified, buried and was resurrected. The first Christian community was founded in Jerusalem, “the Mother of all Churches,” and millions of believers over generations have cast their eyes towards the earthly and the heavenly Jerusalem.
This tour passes through some of the compounds of the various Christian sects in the Old City and opens a window onto the world of Christianity in the Holy City, as well as local and distant cultures.
Entrance to all Christian sites requires modest attire.
